You mentioned you're using redhat--did you run configure with the
"--with-pam" option?

Run configure with the following and see how it works for you:

./configure --with-pam --with-ipv4-default

You may also need to add "--with-md5-passwords" to the configure line (you
shouldn't, since pam should take care of that, but for some reason I've
needed it on some of my servers that have pam).
