One goal of free software is to create a common system freely usable by
all, think of it as something valuable that you own. The freedom in free
software does mean some can and will sell it to make a profit, the gpl
license allows for this.

As a community we need software systems we can trust with all our
personal information, public information that will be available equally
to everyone who desires access to it.

Think of free software as one way to ensure a standards compliant
platform, no proprietary formats controlling access to public data.

When is the last time you had to check a light bulb to see if the
threads matched the socket in a lamp or if a electrical plug on an
device would plug into the socket on your wall. This is the kind of
ubiquity that is need in a publicly owned computer operating system and
one that can only be achieved through free exchange of source code.

Debian GNU/Linux is free software, no commercial entity is building a
horse farm :) It is maintained by volunteers. Think of free software as
community property or pubic service.
