usb-storage help & kernel question

Subject: usb-storage help & kernel question

I upgraded to Skipjack last week (just before 7.3. went final).
Before I upgraded I was able to mount a digital camera as a usb-storage device, loading usb-storage as a module.

Since I upgraded, I can no longer mount the device. I have tried using an older kernel build, but all I get is
"mount: /dev/sdb1 is not a valid block device"

I think one of my old configuration files got overwritten, but .bashrc and /etc/modules.conf look ok. Any idea what I need to do to fix this?

On a second train of thought - has anyone tried the 2.5.x series kernel? I know that it's a developmental build, but does it offer anything for a casual user in terms of performance (I'm running a compaq presario 200MHz with 48M RAM, so I need all the help I can get).

Thanks.

Mike
