How are you putting spam into a file? Like this:

:0:
* [spam filter rules here]
spam

Will put it into a regular mailbox named spam.

I just send spam into a normal mailbox as above. I catch legit messages
every so often. Every few days I might scan the contents of the folder
to make sure nothing important is there before deleting the whole
folder. Procmail will create it again if anything matches the filter.
The only rule I have for reading the spam is to not use an HTML aware
MUA (usually I use Pine).

Cheers,

James
