I agree. Any old Sony digital-8 camera can do analog -> DV conversion,
over Firewire. You're unlikely to get anything using USB that is
superior.

If you intend to edit the video, then ripping from the low-bandwidth
MPEG2 on DVD is likely to introduce a generation loss of quality.
Otherwise this procedure will save you tons of time. No idea how
spendy it is though.
