[aklug] Re: Alaska peering

I will check a traceroute from my Clearwire at the house when I get
home, but I was just talking to a friend that has done a lot of the
cabling around town, mostly for GCI. (BTW - I do mean cabling, not an
installer. As in "has ditch-witch", will connect your new subdivision or
wire-center to the existing system.)

It sounded to me like Clearwire may or may not be downstream from GCI
depending on your location. It will be downstream from someone, but not
necessarily GCI.

He tells me Clearwire buys in bulk from all the carriers. Depends on
who's switch (wire-center) the particular access-point you're connected
to happens to be connected through.

He also told me that when routed through GCI, GCI's switches give 1st
priority to GCI's regular customers. Bulk customers (Clearwire) sit in
the back of the bus. I don't know if the other carriers do this as well,
but as I said, he mostly works for GCI so has more familiarity there.

This could help explain the disparity in connection speeds seen by
myself & William, Christopher, and others. The access-point I'm
connected to may be routed through someone giving out bandwidth on a 1st
come/1st serve basis and they're connected through a GCI switch that has
them sitting in the back of the bus. Did I hear someone say "net
neutrality"?!?
