Top posting...

I'm going to talk out my butt a bit here. I don't know what the setup is
with UAA and the AKLUG listserve. That is, if AKLUG pays dues for
having mail hosted there, or if it's free for anybody, or if some UAA
Admin somewhere is doing AKLUG a favor. If AKLUG isn't paying for it or
hasn't gotten explicit statements saying that yes, AKLUG's mailing list
is hosted free, then there is something to be said for not bothering the
admins. I had free hosting for over a year (I did some favors for the
admins) and when I had problems, I was very reluctant to ask for help.
I didn't want to make waves, especially since when the admins were
helping me, they weren't generating revenue (especially since they
weren't making money off me. Which they now are.)

As for having root: Of course, not everybody will have root. Odds are
that one or two people will have root, and another one or two people
will have accounts. So effectively, we wouldn't "have root". However, we
would be able to manage the system - add new software, update software,
etc. I'm assuming that right now, AKLUG has zero control over the
mailing list apart from one person who kicks people off or lets them on
when they ask to join.

I imagine it's also the nerd factor. I mean, c'mon, we're a LUG. If we
don't have a box on the 'net that we can call "Our Own", then what will
we do with all our extra time? Something productive? Naahhh....
