The key for using IDE in production is to not do what most people do
(which is to ensure good cooling for SCSI drives, but ignore the IDEs).
If you make sure you have good cooling, your IDE drives should be just as
reliable as your SCSI drives.

I'm sure the SCSI zealots will now flame me incessantly, ;-) but in my
years of system administration and hardware work, I've seen very few IDE
drive deaths where a SCSI drive would have survived in the same situation.
It does happen, but they're really pretty rare.
