I don't think that the 'emerge nvidia-kernel' loads the module into the
kernel, so you should just have to load in manually:

modprobe nvidia

Then:

lsmod

and make sure it is there.

Then make sure you add it to your modules.autoload file so that it will
load autmatically on reboot.
