Did you put an 'nvidia' entry in the /etc/modules.autoload/kernel-2.6
file?

I am currently having problems getting my graphics accelerator to work.
I have the driver currently set to "nv" but when i did "emerge
nvidia-kernel" i went into XF86config and and changed the driver to
"nvidia" to try to run the updated driver. When i did that and
restarted X i got this error [EE] failed to load module "nvidia" (module
does not exist, 0) [EE] no drivers available
so far i have tried emerge -C, and redoing my kernel 2.4.24 then re did
the emerge and still no luck. If anyone has any suggests i would
greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
