I'm no expert on this, but ...

Have you also emerged nvidia-glx? Do you have loadable module support in your
kernel? Is your kernel 2.4 or 2.6? Have you searched your filesystem for a
file named "nvidia.o" ? Does /usr/src/linux point to the correct kernel?
Have you tried "modprobe nvidia" ?
