The lock file called "lock" is with the Phoenix variation of Mozilla. I went
looking for that and wound up digging a little deeper. Maybe someone knows
some logical reason as to why they're different?

Greetings all and Mike in particular,
I have had a similar situation. I remember it usually happened when I
shut down without closing the browser first. Mozilla was killed, but its
lock file was not removed. I had to go spelunking in the user's home
subdirectory under "~/.mozilla/<profile name>/<random characters>/"
where I found a file called, "lock". once I removed it, I could bring up
Mozilla with the profile I desired.
Cheerio! fgd.
