I switched my main desktop to Gentoo 1.4 from RedHat 9 a while ago. So far it's quite nice, and when emerge works well, it's really nice. I have ran into a few snags with emerge either not having what I want available or a particular package not working, but I was able to resolve it with a little elbow grease.
