As I mentioned last week I think, FreeBSD and the Linux kernel use
different numbering schemes as they relate to which is development and
which is stable. This makes perfect sense, because they are completely
different operating systems. There's no reason not to upgrade to the
latest stable sources (of which 4.9-prerelease *is* a part of).

Generally speaking it's better if you cvsup the ports tree and then
install software from there vs. pre-built packages from /stand/sysinstall.
However, you should be able to do what you want by editing your stable
supfile, and change the following:

*default release=cvs tag=RELENG_4

to

*default release=cvs tag=RELENG_4_8

Then cvsup, build world, etc., then run /stand/sysinstall.
