FreeBSD's version numbering is not the same as the Linux kernel's. When
you track the stable tree, at the moment that means 4.x. If you want a
stable server or workstation, by all means go to 4.9--especially after the
openssh and sendmail vulnerabilities (among others).

5.x is the semi-development tree at the moment.
