Greetings all members of the UAA German Culture Club (GCC). I am
including the Alaska Linux Users Group (AKLUG) as an information
addressee, so I want to let everybody know who is who.
I asked the AKLUG to make copies of the current KNOPPIX CD. I had an
older version at the GCC meeting last Thursday. I was not able to
demonstrate its features, but since then, I have taken the time to
investigate its possible use to the GCC for Friday, October 3 at the
German Day activities at UAA.
The CD may be read with a computer running any of the Windows (and maybe
Mac too) operating systems, although I have not been able to try any
version except Windows 98. The autostart feature brings up a nice screen
in German. One may click on various buttons to discover what is on the
CD (written in German). One may also select other languages including
English.
The CD may be use to boot the computer into the KNOPPIX operating system
without doing any damage to the operating system on the computer. One
will see the screen as above.
Finally, if the computer is connected to the Internet, some of the
buttons are links to German language web sites.
I will have about a dozen CD's to give away. I would like to have space
to set up a computer for demonstration purposes. It would really be
great to be able to connect to the UAA ethernet backbone and thence to
the Internet. I think it would be a real encouragement to any German
language student who is even slightly geeky.
I have made a nice label for the CD's that has the following
information:
