Weird I use Cygwin all the time with 9.1 and remote X

You say it is a 98 box? that may be the issue. I use both XPuke and 2k
and have had no probs

one thing to test Fireup Xwin with no display manger but a shell (edit
the startx.bat on the cygwin box). Ssh to the the remote server from
the shell, and try startkde. This may work.
