I'm forwarding this to the list to clarify my situation. Thanks for the responses.

I am not searching for a work-around method - of which I know there are many. I would like to implement it as I have specified (using ssh, ipchains). I made the mistake of giving a specific situation that would not necessarily match all of the intended final implementation specifics. The main reason I need to use the forwarding is that in one implementation, the SMTP server is locked down to accept mail from designated IP's. I need to be able to forward through one of the linux boxes that are "legal". Yes, I could use an MTA on the remote box. If I can't get a forwarding method to work, that is likely the route I'll go. Thanks.

(Sorry about the clipped lines. ACS Webmail is doing it.)
