out of memory errors

Subject: out of memory errors

I came home today and found that x-window had died and restarted, login
screen showing. I get the following message from '/var/log/kern.log' .
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot something like this ? The box has only
been up for one day, I added new hardware, but it usually runs 24/7. I
have 1gb of memory and 512 of swap. I added another 512 of swap to see
if that has any bering on the issue.
