There's your problem: when your ppp software tried to set the default
gateway, it probably failed because you already have a default gateway. Are
you running a segmented network? If not, then you shouldn't have a default
gateway at all. If so, add routes for the specific subnets, but don't set a
default gateway. That way ppp can do what it needs to do.
