Actually, I was logged is as SU while dinking around. I have tried to
run ifconfig while I was in the /sbin dir. So I don't think that is it.
Also, though I am far from sure, I think I was able to run it as a user
before this installation.

By default, I think that RH doesn't include /sbin in the path for
regular users.

Try /sbin/ifconfig
