What does your /var/log/messages say?
Are you attempting to connect on bootup or after?
for example the pertinent lines in my /var/log/messages....

Dec 30 04:38:10 home pppd[2123]: primary DNS address xx.x.xx.x
Dec 30 04:38:10 home pppd[2123]: secondary DNS address xx.x.xx.x
Of course the above xx's and comments should have numbers......
Otherwise you may see the boot-up messages and if not then try
non-framebuffer boot to see them !?
