I never thought about using the holding disk as a "permanent" repository,
but yes you can restore from there. Amanda keeps track of where the
backup filesets are (holding disk, or if tape, what tape #), so when you
actually go to restore via amrecover, instead of prompting you for a tape
number, it'll just grab stuff from the holding disk.
