actualy there could be a couple of things going on.
athlons of old were very persnickity about the memory
they accepted. sometimes i cured a problem by going
over to the box memory box and replacing the memory
with an identical or faster dimm. i still have those
kind of probs with athons, just not as often. the
other thing that comes to mind is the probs i have had
with some old ati vidio cards. once i put in 512 megs
i was stuck. if i put more memory in, the video mode
droped back to 16 color, 640 x 480 and nothing i could
do would make it work. the problem went away if i
changed to a diff video card. this happened on various
kinds of mobos so it wasnt just a mobo prob, it was
the ati 32 meg video card. some video cards just dont
work with some mobos above a certain range of ram to
as others have pointed out. maybe a bios upgrade but i
hate sugesting that to anybody unless absolutly
needed, one wrong thing, one solar flare while its
downloading etc, and the mobo may be junk afterwards.
try the 512 meg ddr by itself and see if it works fine
that way, it may be just a ddr stick it dont like for
some reason. after that, try the 512 with just one of
the 256 in place, if you can try a diff brand or
faster ddr i would also try that. id sure hate to
think that im going to start having probs with nvidia
chipsets like i did with ati. :p

hey heres a hardware question .. not specific to linux
but i need the
knowledge.. :
One of my boxes runs AMD Athalon XP 1700+ on a soyo
dragon plus
motherboard. Graphics card is a Xtasy Geforce 3 ti
500. well im runnin 512
megs of pc2100 ddr ram in 2 ports of 256 a piece..
well 2 days ago i
noticed a 512 meg dimm for sale on base so i bought
it... its pc2100 and all
that good stuff.. but when i put it in the third ram
bay it freaked
out.. like i would be tryin to run unreal 2003 to test
out the difference
and the computer would freeze
so i change the order i put them in and nothing
happened.. after
exhaustin all the ram slots... i pulled it out and
viola it worked again
fine... come to find out i was gettin a graphics
error.. sayin that the
NViDIA card couldnt draw somthing... but my computer
would shut off..
ALOT.. has anyone ever heard of such a thing? ..
needless to say i removed
the dimm and havnt put it in yet.. imma bout to take
it back unless
someone has a good answer for my problem.. thanx ahead
of time...
