Well, certain types of partial battery failure can draw the RTC
voltage down and cause RTC issues, but this is rare (often causes CMOS
issues (random loss of BIOS settings)). Doubtful this is it though.

How old is the MB, and of what make? What CPU type? Is it SMP?
