What do your partitions look like? You probably need a /boot partition
within the first 1023 cylinders and you either don't have a specific boot
partition or it is after the first 1023 cylinders. What i've always done is
make a 20 meg or so /boot at the very beginning of the drive, so you are
assured it is within the first 1023 cyls, and I have never had a problem
with it..

I don't know enough about it though to tell you if it is possible to fix
this problem without a fresh install though..
