While I appreciate the private email message you sent to Arthur and myself
about this, I'm less certain about this one. Your wording seems to
indicate that you've seen problems with the site before. While my own
perception has been that the site's reliability has been top notch, I'm
perfectly willing to give you the benefit of the doubt and accept the
possibility that mysql has in fact died in the past for unknown reasons.
If that's the case, is there any particular reason you preferred to
complain publicly about this? After all--I've never received email from
you in the past regarding problems with the site. In my experience public
complaining is best reserved for those situations where the people
responsible have been notified privately, but do nothing. Unfortunately,
it's also done when an individual is more interested in ridiculing than he
is about actually helping.
I'm sure you're really only interested in helping, and that your message
to the list was intended to help get the site back up and functional
quickly. But please keep in mind that the people who maintain the server
do so on a volunteer basis, and if the first notification of a problem
that the volunteer sees is a public one, it can make him question why he's
even volunteering in the first place.
