Subject: problem wit dselect/dpkg

You could try to use dpkg to remove the package. It is a little lower
level than apt.
dpkg --list X* # find the package name(s)
dpkg --remove Xserv...deb # remove it
If it gives some sort of error take a look at the force options.
dpkg --force-help # Shows you a list of options
