Emacs is popular. I've heard good things about JBuilder Personal Edition
which is free for non-commercial use. http://www.borland.com/jbuilder/
Forte is also free http://www.sun.com/forte/ and is decent. If you want
something simple and easy to learn try http://www.bluej.org It's really
cool and is used mostly for teaching Java. A couple of us are starting an
XP Java Study Group if you are interested.
