GCI COM21 cable modems have an internal MAC table that is limited to 8 entries.

They are a Layer-2 device and communicate via MAC addresses, not IP addresses.

Using a small router/firewall and doing NAT/PAT will overcome the 8 MAC
limitation.

If you directly connect more than 8 MAC-addressable devices to a GCI COM21 cable
modem, it's MAC table will start thrashing/flushing and the result will be a
loss of performance through that cable modem.

I don't belive it's that GCI only "allows" 8 computers at a time, it's
because the cable modem's internal address table only holds 8 entries at a
time.
