Instead of VMs, have you considered docker containers? I do web
development (drupal), and am migrating my team off our vagrant
development setups to docker and getting huge returns on fast startup
times and OS overhead savings. On my laptop I could generally run 4
development VMs (LAMP with bonus tools and xdebugging/profiling stuffs)
before things got sluggish. I've run 10 docker stacks (all very
similar) without any real pressure on the cpu or memory.
