 Marc, you didn't answer my question about the URL!
 
 Forgive me if I sound a bit crabby here and don't take it
 personally - but I have considerable *tools* in python and other
 programming languages - am I going to have to just give them up?

 That wouldn't be linux-ish, in my book.
