There are at least three oss compilation/bin package management systems:
macports, fink, and http://mxcl.github.com/homebrew/

You'll also want Apple's dev tools (Xcode) which you can download for free
from the app store. That will provide most of the dev tools you need.

With 8GB of ram, you might try virtualization for OS testing rather than
rebooting. There's and Parallels (not free) and VirtualBox (free).

And if you're really keerazy about it, you can boot into linux and run Mac
OS X under virtualization. Let us know how it goes if you do. :)
