Is dhcp/bootp a required part of this whole schema? It seems like, if i already know my ip address and the address of the tftp server, i should be able to enter them at boot time if i want to. Or am i missing something?

:-) Congrats! Now that you have that you should try a fat diskless client
setup. PXE boot a kernel configured for NFS root...

Net-base installs are handy. I've got a Panasonic Toughbook with no
removable media and so used PXE to get Linux on it. It's also real nice
when you have servers on the other side of the state and you can now do full
OS loads on them from home. :-)
