When I first started playing with Sendmail and Majordomo, they worked
pretty well. Then I set up a couple of lists that instead of 20-30+
people were more like several hundred. Then I noticed that Sendmail was
an absolute dog delivering all that mail. It didn't do any sorting of the
mail queue, resulting in one smtp connection for each message.

Like Tom, I tried Postfix and found it handled the outbound queue much,
much better. A single smtp connection per MX host, as well as smtp
pipelining made for much faster flushing of the queue. Ever since then
the UAA library's mail server ran Postfix, and I believe it still uses it
today for handling this list.

In fairness to Sendmail though, I think it eventually caught up to Postfix
in some ways like queue sorting and pipelining, although it still lags a
bit in performance. I have to admit, nothing is as configurable as
Sendmail--if you can dream it up, there's probably a way to make it work
with Sendmail. And with large amounts of psychotropic drugs the .cf and
.mc files actually start to make sense too!
