Yeah, see, that's my problem. I need something to watch what goes on
what tape, and have a bit more sophisticated way of dealing with errors.

I'm familiar with arkeia, which is pretty neat, but is an application
you need to pay for (d'oh!), but that has saved my bacon several times
at a previous job. Amanda uses tar, which is why I don't like it; and
bacula appears to be a huge pain in the keister to set up, which is bad
if I ever quit, get hit by a bus, or have my fingers smashed.
