[aklug] HTPC question

guys,

i bought a really nice hp media laptop a few years back for use at both work and home/vacation. after changing jobs i didn't need it so much so i decided to turn it into a home theater pc which basically means i finally used the hdmi out to connect it to my tv using my hdtv as a monitor and primarily used it to stream video/audio from my file server.

well, fast forward a few years and it looks like the video has finally died on it and i'm looking for a replacement. i have no use for a laptop anymore, but i'm definitely feeling the withdrawal from my htpc so i want to build a full-fledged dedicated unit. i've done my research and loaded up my newegg shopping card, but my question is have there been any advancements in running a full-fledged htpc (tv recording/time shifting, etc.) with a gci cable box?

i remember an earlier thread about possibly being able to control the cable box with a firewire cable, but i don't know if there was a conclusion on that or what apps would support that. basically, if it's not possible to run a tivo-alike for tv recording/time shifting i'm not going to need nearly as much storage as most files are stored on my fileserver.

maybe some of the gci guys on the list could shed some light on this...

thanks,
clay
