I'm not sure this is true anymore, or maybe not the way I'm thinking
about it. Ubuntu now has a utility called "Jockey" to install
proprietary drivers. It won't build from source, but it will install
and configure the fglrx driver for you. I used kde-jockey to configure
my laptop, and it's running great!
