I believe the problem that Mike ran into was intentional. It's a common
practice for the many less ethical companies to make it difficult to
transfer a domain away from them, since they get revenue while it's assigned
to them, plus if the registration lapses they have a grace period during
which they can try to auction it off for much more revenue.

Issues like that are why I also patronize Domain Monger. While I know they
aren't the cheapest, I'm willing to pay for the excellent service they've
always provided (for about eight years now), and I have no concerns about
their ethics.
