[aklug] The business side of things

Well as you all could tell from the posts, a majority of you said, and
I paraphrase, "If someone can't come up with a good reason to have a
business entity, then we shouldn't really have one".

My biggest concern about this was the fact that if we were no longer an
Alaskan non-profit that we would no longer have access to Highland Tech.

After talking with Mark Standley, he assured me that this would not be
an issue.

So there you have it. There are no compelling reasons to keep the
entity going, at the moment.

I say, "at the moment", because I can envision a situation where we
grow to the size that necessitates that organization.

I'd like to offer these suggestions to move forward:

- Get rid of the P.O. Box. I'm not exactly sure if we paid this in
advance, and if we did, can we get our money back (Jim's really). I'd
be happy to provide a business address where we can get our mail.

- Keep the current business paperwork until it expires. Reviewing our
need for the organization before it expires and decide once and for all
what to do with it.

- Focus on growing the organization. This is a tough one because there
is a huge need for time commitment. However, the recent vote gave me
indications that folks are ready to take on some responsibilities and
make some time commitments.

I love that folks are tirelessly going to Friday Night Linux and
providing a place that people can show up and get help with their
problems. These folks who participate on that level are a big reason
why we exist today.

Not all of us can participate in that capacity, including myself.

Thanks for listening.
