You might consider xaralx as well. It does some things that
Inkscape cannot, and you can simply import png images from
xarlx as you need them. Their tutorials are also good.
The linux version lacks features from the Windows version
(of which the most vexing was any way to portray quotes
properly. If I am going to do desktop publishing, I should
at least be able to get quotes, mdash, ndash correctly.
Inkscape also has this problem.)
Of course, if you get a very complex pages, it may dump,
so save intermediate results often.
For routine stuff (without fancy text flows, off page
continuation and the like) I still prefer groff.
