After all the years I still laugh every single time I hear this thread
raised again.
Still only because I have come so far from when I first started to follow AKLUG.

In the beginning, I hated when replies-to pointed to the poster and
not the list.

In the middle, I started thinking this was a simple throttle control.
When reply-to points to the list it encrouages increased number of
replies, nested conversations, long conversations often pointless, top
posting, and all the rest. When reply-to points to the poster it
creates a lot of off-list chatter among people, keeps the archives and
list clean and direct but leads to a lot of shorter conversations
(on-list)

In the end, I side with Arther as the last word.

Today, I don't really care but I wager Arther was right all along.

I might suggest a schedule which this behavior might be changed or
switched so that during say 2 quarters a year the list promotes
chatter and at other time reduces it.

This provides for a schedule of increased chatter on-list rather than
a constant debate on switching it at all.
