Trouble getting Firefox to run Java

I'm tearing my hair out trying to get a java plugin to run in
firefox. I've tried it with j2re1.4.2_03 and jre1.5.0_07, in both
Mozilla and Firefox. Followed the instructions at

and at
http://fedoranews.org/tchung/sunjava/
and anywhere else I could find them, modified to match my system.

All to no avail.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!
