Just because grub will do other fs types, doesn't mean you should. I've
seen more than 1 recommendation that one should stick to ext2 for the
/boot partition. This is because if rescue is needed, nearly everybody
(that counts anyway) talks to ext2. est3 was also considered good too
because it can be mounted ext2.

I seem to remember that back in the 2.2 kernel days, 35MB was pretty
common for a boot partition. It seemed to start growing in the 2.4 days
and now seems to be about 100MB. We also used to be able to have a
bootable kernel on a floppy.

Of course we all know that you Debian users are ... (excuse me while I
pull on my flame retardant shorts) .. are still back in the 20th century
:-).
