I think a lot of the companies are cutting down on warranties because
it's too expensive. Think about it - a heck of a lot of drives die in 3
years. They could end up replacing a heck of a lot of drives ni 3 years,
so it's cheaper to just... not cover them.

Seagates have larger warranties, but are also more expensive.

There's a seagate in the best buy ad today for about what... 110 bucks
before mail in rebates, and 40 bucks after rebates. Then, there's a
200G sata drive at compUSA for 100 bucks I think, WITH sata card.

I can find slightly better deals online - 93 bucks for a 200G IDE drive,
but after shipping, you might end up paying about the same amount.

I can go check out the seagate today and see what the warranty is; if
it's more than a year, I'll pick it up. $110 bucks, with two rebates
brings the price down quite a ways (any money coming back from the
rebates will be to AKLUG, of course). The money Lee is giving and the
money I'm giving will cover it. That'll get us moving. We can pick up
the second drive a bit more at our liesure... Maybe after the rebates
come back?
