Unfortunately, I think the only suggestion here that looks promising is

the Lavasoft Adware. I think I knew about this when I set the computer
up for her, but Windows had this other thing that I figured I give a
shot. I guess that was a bad idea.

I'd like to put some sort of 'nix variant on there. Unfortunately, there
are a couple of websites we need access to for our real estate work that
require IE running on windoze. The sites require ActiveX. This is why my
laptop dual-boots and I have VMWare running on my box at work. I only
use IE when I have to, and Firefox the rest of the time. Getting other
people to do something like this when they have no concept of the
problems... The couple of time I've tried to point out the problem, I've
been met with glazed eyeballs.

I've been fairly, but not 100%, successful at getting my
industry-specific software running under Wine.

It's not just private industry though. The Municipality of Anchorage's
GIS mapping system is unusable unless you're running IE on Windows.
Mat-Su Borough's works partially, but it requires Autodesk's DWF Viewer
which I've heard some people have been successful at getting to run
under Wine. My success has been limited though. Kenai's GIS system works
pretty well with Firefox/Mozilla.
