RE: PCLinuxOS - a livecd distribution, better than Knoppix

Launch synaptic from Configuration -->Packaging.
I've never used Xandros, so can't make the comparison.

Mandrake 9.2 .rpms work fine, but I've never bothered to add the source. There have been a few packages that I added from non-Tex sources, but I just downloaded the rpm and installed it with kpackage.

As far as making your own distro, look into mklivecd. There is software (might even be on the CD) for making your own livecd. I think you can read about it on the pclos page, under Remastering (going from memory here). From what I recall, you can make your own customized livecd with fairly minimal effort, if you have a machine with a dedicated partition and enough memory. You would need about 2GB on a dedicated partition.

Anyway, glad you like it.

  Okay, I've found that the LiveCD-install software works great, installed the LiveCD to HDD without problems.

  Then I opened the "Mission Control Center" (which I really like) but it will not launch synaptic....
  I did work from the command line using apt-get and installed several tools. I noticed as you mentioned that it's .rpm based. The sources.list points to only one source (Tex's). I'm curious to see what breaks if I change sources....

  Very nice interface! Happy to see fluxbox installed along with Gnome and KDE. First time I previewed the distro I thought.....move over Zandros....

  Thanks for the tip on this distro Russ. I'm finding motivation to start putting together my own distro!

Package management is via synaptic, which is a graphical front-end for apt.
However, the actual file format for packages is .rpm. urpmi is very similar
in functionality to apt, and synaptic is extremely easy to use.

Also, I said in my email yesterday that there was a new version out.
Apparently, Tex has not yet released the final version of Preview 6, as there
are still some major show-stoppers. I don't know the details, but I'm sure
they're on the forums at pclinuxonline.com.
