It is supposed to be possible (with an add-on) to put zipslack (Slackware)
on an 8MB box. ZipSlack is intended to be run off a zip-disk, but it is
possible to install it to the hard-drive with an ext2 filesystem. I suspect
this is about as close to a modern distro as you are going to get on a box
like that.
