Well, for me, there is only one way to surf with a dial-up connection:
GNU/Debian/Linus setup as a dial-up router. I am using an internal
(win)modem and a 10Base2 NIC. I have the pppd set to dial on demand.

I find that most of the time, dial-up is just slightly slower than DSL.
When I am doing upgrades or downloading ISO's, I set it up before going
to bed and let it run all night. I have voice mail ($5.50/month) to
catch all =;-)}} the calls when I am surfing during the day.
