It is "polite" - instead of adding to the load on the root servers, I use GCI. And judging from Scott's IP address, we're both GCI customers so it makes sense for him to use them as well.

At least as far as my internet use is concerned, the chances that any DNS information is concerned already being in GCI's cache is pretty high. (CNN, /., Amazon...) So there is some infinitesimally small reduction in the number of requests that head off to the root servers.
